Things to lower your electric bill

Calgary home inspectors have seen people go to great lengths in order to save on electricity. It is important for people to save energy for a variety of reasons, but number one on most people’s lists is to save money. Here are a few tips to help you stay green and help you save money.

One thing you can do is call your local government or energy office and ask if they offer home-energy audits, or maybe even energy-efficiency grants. Some places do audits for free, but you should ask about cost just in case.

Some of the biggest uses of energy is cooling, heating, and hot water. Start by ensuring that everything is sealed and insulated. Use weather-stripping around doors and windows. This does wear down over time so check it every year.

Reduce heating and hot water temperatures, and save energy here too. Using a thermostat temperature of about 18C will help a great deal, and if you are still a little chilly you can put a sweater on. Try setting your hot water heater to 50C to save some energy. You will still get the hot water you need without the high electric bill to accompany it.

It is usually better to use natural gas since it is climate-friendly. If you are not part of a gas network then use wood.

Try taking showers instead of baths. It has been proven that showers consume less energy than baths. This will help to reduce your water usage too.

Use fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent. They last longer, use less electricity, and still put out the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb.

Make sure that televisions, computers, and other devices are off and not on standby. Standby still consumes a great deal of energy. Also, unplug chargers and other devices that do not need to stay plugged in.

Calgary home inspectors know that saving energy is important. So here’s hoping that you reduce your bill and save some energy!
