Winter proofing your home is important whether you live in Calgary or elsewhere around the world. Home inspectors have been able to see the damage that can occur when a home hasn’t been properly winterized.
To winterize your home there are a few basic steps that you can take. Replace worn weather-stripping around doors and windows. Using caulk can also help to fill in any gaps. Make sure your insulation doesn’t need to be replaced. You can also install storm windows, or cover windows with plastic.
Basic outside the house care is important too. You should clean gutters, repair any roof leaks, and trim off any tree branches hanging over the houses.
Safety is always of great importance. With cold weather many homes put their fireplaces and heaters to use. Make certain that you have these cleaned and inspected every year.

Insulating pipes can save you from having to replace them. Run water at a trickle to avoid freezing. If you can not afford to buy the insulation for pipes use newspapers and plastic.
For safety purposes keep fire extinguishers in easy reach. Be sure that you know how to shut off water valves in case of burst pipes. Finally, hire contractor to check the structural ability of the roof to be sure that it will hold under the weight of the snow.
